From the Jamaican Observer

Jamaican-born actor and film producer Orville Matherson will be in the island from December 6-13 to scout locations and hold preliminary meetings for his debut project, the feature film A Dance For Grace.

Matherson... it was always our dream to involve Jamaica in the project

A Dance For Grace, previously titled Saving Grace, began shooting several months ago in various North American locations including New York, Connecticut and Atlanta.
Shooting is expected to be completed within the next few months, following the filming of several sequences in Jamaica.

A Dance For Grace tells the story of a group of mostly Caucasian high school students living in a small rural town who decide to enter a dance competition, hoping to use the prize money to fund a life-saving operation required by one of their town's most revered citizens - a middle-aged woman named Grace.

Fresh out the studios with a scorching hot crossover single dubbed "She Bad" recording artiste Garland Rowe better known as G Whizz is enjoying rave reviews for what is said to be the first official song off his upcoming still untitled debut album.

G Whizz who has been making his rounds as a singjay on the local circuit now for years is no stranger to the industry but in recent times have been making real strides in his career.
G Whizz in an exclusive interview explained to Worldflavas.com how the song came about.

"Well is like when i went to Cayman to do a show in May of this year I linked up with some producers who approached me with a riddim called "She Bad", they wanted me to build a concept around that and when I came back to Jamaica my Manager John GQ from Fam House and I sat down and was like since the riddim had that "She Bad" name lets just work with it. I spent some time coming up with the lyrics for the song and recorded in late October. Since then the song has just blown up radio has been showing me alot of love. People like Liquid, Jenny Jenny, ZJ Sparks, High Zabing, Kurt Riley, Johnny Kool and many more have been playing it and for that I am grateful".

Advice with Malaika

malaika.jpg I am doing this a little different today,

I am not responding to an e-mail or letter for advice but rather am offering everyone some words of wisdom.

I am here in New York celebrating this ThanksGiving Holiday with friends, loved ones and family.

Every year sitting at the table, I ask my children what they are thankful for, and their answer vary from silly to serious.

This year so many things are affecting this world of ours, from the economy, to famine, wars and deaths. So for those of you reading my words today, I'd like to say one thing,

"Be thankful for your life, tomorrow is promised to no one. Live your life to the fullest everyday, and do not worry about the "petty" things that pester your every day life".

And last, "If you are unhappy about your life, CHANGE IT"

Who is Keri Hilson ?

keri_hilson.jpg(Kingston, Jamaica)

You've probably heard her name before and by now is starting to look out for her in videos but do you know anything else about Keri Hilson besides the fact that she's beautiful and on the rise? You should.

Well for starters Keri Hilson is only 24, but she is a veteran in the music industry actively writing songs and singing backup for a variety of artists for more than 5 years. She is a member of the songwriting collective known as the Clutch and has credits as a songwriting on songs like Mary J. Blige's "Take Me As I Am," Pussycat Dolls' "Wait a Minute," Ciara's "Ooh Boy," and Omarion's "Ice Box". Before her work with the Lord of Production Timbaland, Keri Hilson made appearances as a featured vocalist on singles by Xzibit and Lloyd. Now she's stepping into her own spotlight with a new album. Earlier this year she released a song entitled Energy and now shes back with the Timberlan featured "Return The Favor".

WorldFlavas Video Premier - Kanye's "Love Lockdown

I strongly believe as a recording artist one should always test themselves and show some level of versatility. Although the industry blatantly dictates repetition people like Kanye West has always done the unexpected like "Diamonds From Sierra Leone". Fresh off his latest album 808's & Heartbreaks comes the seductive and rather intriguing Love Lockdown Video. Not many will understand the concept with the African theme but if you ask me it coincides with the songs mystical nature. The drum line for the song is somewhat tribal, like a war salute.

As most of you know, Carlton Grant JR, SPragga Benz's son was murdered over the summer (read story here). Just in this report from Radio Jamaica:

Director of Public Prosecutions Paula Llewellyn has ruled that three policemen are to be charged for the August 23 killing of teenager Carlton Grant Junior.

Two of the policemen who are all attached to the Kingston Central Police Station are to be charged with murder, while the third will face a charge of assault.

What's really going on with Spice and Kartel? (PICS)

They say a picture speaks a thousand words, but in this case are we to really believe that? "Rompin Shop" is the new BLAZING single from Spice and Vybz Kartel, you can listen to it here
Now to everyone with good sense you have to realize that those pics are for entertainment only, as the video (i assume probably to come) will be. The problem right now is that with the drama that happened over the weekend with Spice and her common law husband, rumors are circulating that the domestic violence incident were cause by those pictures.

Spice issued this statement :  "It was not a beating ting. I merely wanted him to leave the house and he refused, and we got into an argument and I called the police. They escorted us both to the station," she explained during an interview yesterday. "He was on his cellphone and she told him to get off, and he flashed her off and she went to arrest him. He resisted and that's how he got the second charge and then he began to curse, and that's how he got the third charge for disorderly conduct," she said.

manman.jpg Associated Press
ST JOHN'S, Antigua (AP) _ Jamaican dance hall star Beenie Man was briefly detained by Antiguan authorities Sunday after performing at an opposition political rally. The Grammy-winning musician, who complained during his Saturday night performance that immigration authorities questioned him as he entered Antigua, was again questioned before he was allowed to board a flight and return to Jamaica.
Acting Police Commissioner Thomas Bennett said Beenie Man, whose real name is Anthony Moses Davis, was questioned "regarding his performance" and released without charges, but said he could not provide further details. During the Antiguan Labor Party rally, Beenie Man added a few lines to one of his popular songs about being hassled by Antiguan immigration authorities. Labor Party Chairman Gaston Browne said officials had wanted to know whether the singer had a work permit to perform at the concert. Browne said that Beenie Man was originally paid an undisclosed sum to perform, but he later returned the money because he did not have a permit. Beenie Man was recently cleared of tax evasion charges in Jamaica.

Chris Brown stole the show at last night's AMA. He won 3, that's right 3 AMA's. Best male soul/R&B artists, male pop/rock artist and the coveted artist of the year award.
I only watched 5 of the performances, Beyonce left me breathless, just watching her felt as if I had been dancing all night. Rihanna put me to sleep, but she looked hot though! Pussy Cat dolls made me feel as if I was in a strib club (don't ask how I know about strip clubs), Pink and Sarah McLachlan voices were those of Angels, and Alicia Keys, Queen Latifah and Kathleen Battle made me feel proud to be a Super Woman (yes I am, I have a cape to prove it).

bounty_killer.jpgThe U.K. has granted Bounty Killer a temporary visa and he is set to perform a show this Sunday at The Stratford Rex.

Bounty Killer has not signed the Reggae Compassionate Act.

Leading human rights activist Peter Tatchell has said that the Metropolitan police would cancel a concert in London by a reggae artist notorious for his homophobic lyrics if there was a riot, but they ignore "polite, peaceful lobbying.

Mr Tatchell, who is a parliamentary candidate for the Green party, is furious that Bounty Killer has been given permission to perform by the Home Office.

"Police officers are being sacked for being members of the BNP, yet this guy incites murder and they do nothing.

"There is a clear correlation between murder music and homophobic violence, especially in Jamaica, where the release of anti-gay tracks often coincides with a rise in queer-bashing violence," said Mr Tatchell.

I am in a real WorldFlavas mood today, and that is why I am bringing some love from Africa. In the documentary posted on Reggae in Africa, someone mentioned the artist "Chameleone". I did a little research on him, from his myspace, to what Wikipedia had to say about him. (read below or click on text).

Joseph Mayanja (born 1979) is a hip hop and ragga musician from Uganda, known for his stage name Jose Chameleone or just as Chameleone or Chameleon. He started his career in the late 90's affiliated to Ogopa DJs record label from Kenya. One of his first songs was "Bageya", featuring Redsan, a Kenyan artist. He also collaborated with fellow Ugandan Bebe Cool, but later the two are known to have a tense rivalry.

I absolutely adore this video, the beat, the voice, the riddim, the flava! Thanks UGPulse.

I know many of you will notice that the suffering of people is the same wherever you are, a ghetto is a ghetto, and whether it is in Jamaica or Uganda, we are one and the same. This is in 5 parts, watch all of them and please feel free to comment.

Reggae to the World!!!

onelovebob.jpg So I came across this article in the Gleaner, and I know after Eek-a-Mouse comments at CaribFest Cares, it sparked discussions all over the world. Should only Jamaican make reggae Music?

And where does Reggae takes its influence from? Should it be limited to only the originators?

Of course not, the thing about music is that it bridges people all over the world, isn't that what bob Marley meant when he said "One Love"?

Jamaica should be proud that their music is loved and appreciated all over the world, after all "Imitation is the most sincere form of flattery". Since when should music only be conformed to one people?

Here is an excerpt from the article: 6 OF the 10 discs in Billboard Magazine's Reggae Chart are by non-Jamaican acts. Veteran British group UB40 heads the latest listing with its Greatest Hits.

In second position is Jewish reggae act Matisyahu with his Extended Play release, Shattered, while VP Records' popular compilation Reggae Gold is third. Bermuda dancehall artiste Collie Buddz clocks in at number four with his self-titled debut, with California reggae band Rebelution completing the top five with Courage To Grow. Ky-Mani Marley's Radio, Amplify by John Brown's Body, Lucky Dube's Retrospective, Best of Shaggy: The Boombastic Collection and Sizzla: The Very Best of Sizzla Kalonji are the other albums in the Top 10.

ninjwtmk.JPG Ninja Man made a special appearance, a very special performance indeed as he answered charges of violating the noise abatement act in Jamaica. Desmond Ballantine a.k.a Ninja Man, appeared before the the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court.

The police alleges that on November 10th 2008 in Drewsland, Ninja Man promoted an event to which he had not received permission from the local police, and thus was issued a summons to appear in court.

Ninja Man plead guilty, even though he informed the court that he did seek a permit but no one got back to him, and since it was a peaceful event for his "One Umbrella" peace movement charity to help communities, and not a dance he went ahead with the event. The court date has been adjourned to January 14th 2009.

Avant has some of the sexiest slow songs like, "Making good love"(my fav), "Read your mind"(ok my other fav), "Separated", "Phone Sex" and so many more.

Usain/Mavado versus Asafa/Kartel

asfa.jpgIt is not exactly how it sounds, but it just occurred to me that this rivalry between 2 of the fastest men alive and competitors Usain Bolt and Asafa Powell, also have somewhat of a music rivalry.

It is well known that Usain Bolt definitely loves Mavado's music and that Asafa Powell has declared himself a Kartel supporter. (coincidence?)

Asafa Powell is in studio producing "Trod It" for Konscious on a Stephen McGregor riddim. Remember them? They were finalist at the 2008 Magnum Kings and Queens Dancehall competition. I am not surprised though, Asafa grew up in a church going, musical family, and his love for music, dreams of recording and producing are now a reality. So, how long before Usain goes in the studio?

Charly Blacks is back with another banger, his new song is entitled "Bubble"  and it is the lead single off Arif Cooper's rhythm Sexy Girl. The song boast cameos from some of Jamaica's most prominent dancehall, radio and tv personalities such as Nikki Z, Miss Kitty, Chi Ching Ching, Nico Bam Bam, and Unicorn.  Personally I like it, dancehall has been taken over by dance moves being done by either a group of male or female by themselves. With this song we should see more men and women partnering up and getting down and dirty.

Bembe Thursdays ended prematurely two nights ago at Weekenz on Constant Spring Road when Alliance selectors, Foota Hype and Boom Boom, came onstage and disconnected Richie Feelings' microphone because the selector was playing too many songs by Vybz Kartel, Mavado's lyrical nemesis.

katwil.jpgActor and comedian Katt Williams, of movies "First Sunday" and "Norbit" fame, apparently has made a stop in Sumter. Unfortunately it was not for one of his stand-up comedy routines but rather a visit with family members that allegedly ended with a psychiatric evaluation at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

The comedian, known for appearances on MTV's "Wild 'n Out" and BET's "Comic View" has made media reports recently for exhibiting erratic behavior, including not showing for an appearance on "Late Night with Conan O'Brien" in New York on Nov. 4 and being arrested on weapons charges later that week after a traffic stop. On Friday, he turned up in Sumter and allegedly underwent a mental health evaluation for a possible hospital commitment, at the urging of local family members. This was after run-ins with both city and county law enforcement.

He allegedly assaulted a photographer that was taking pics of him leaving the club (I wonder who he was with that he didn't want his pic taken, mmm). The photographer Terry Blackburn received bruises and cuts.

Kanye West was arrested later on at his Hilton Hotel in Gateshead. Wasn't Kanye just found not guilty of assaulting another photographer at LAX?

Listen Kanye, I know that many paparazzi make a living suing stars and claiming to have gotten hurt while taking pics, wouldn't it be much easier to smile at the camera, you know the same way you use to do it when you were starving for your pic taken?

The streets are talking - Did Blak Ryno get shot?

blakryno.jpgSo you know that Malaika Passa love a good passa story, I tend to pass on many of them, or just chat about it on WorldFlavas Radio, but enough is enough. This War thing needs to stop. Rumor has it that Einstein recently "shot" at Blak Ryno. Why do you ask?

I guess it all stems from this Alliance versus Portmore Empire, but that's just my guess.
Portmore Empire DJ Blak Ryno "Thug Anthem" is presently on the RE charts, and has some of the craziest tunes in dancehall right now.

I reached out to Blak Ryno's camp and was told that indeed there was a shooting in the Copper Shot Studio but that Blak Ryno was not involved and that Einstein never shot at him. Blak Ryno is the only member of the Portmore Empire in Jamaica as the Empire is in Guyana performing.

D'angel launched her new video in Jamaica at the Hilton Hotel in New Kingston. This song seems very personal to D'Angel, as many of the lyrics seem to come straight from her trials and tribulations over the last few years. I really like what she represents, she has always held herself with much class amid all the "bad talk and rumors".

She credits her son Marco Dean to have taught her to be more grounded, focused and more responsible.

jak.jpgJAKARTA (Reuters) - R&B singer Rihanna has cancelled a sold-out concert in the Indonesian capital Jakarta on Friday because of security concerns, event organizers said.

Indonesia has been on alert in case of reprisals after three Islamist militants were executed early this week for their parts in the 2002 Bali nightclub bombings that killed 202 people.

"The reason is because the security situation in Indonesia is not conducive," said Dive Poernomo, a spokeswoman for Showmaster Live, the event organizer.

She also said that neighboring Australia had reissued a travel warning urging its citizens to reconsider plans to visit Indonesia because of the threat of attacks after the executions of the Bali bombers.

malaika.jpg Deal Malaika,

I have a very weird situation that I need help, or at least some advice on it. I have been dating this guy for 8 months and at first everything was fine, you know we go out to movies, dance, dinner and have fun. I am a hard working, confident, got my own and sexy woman. Now that the holidays are coming he wants me to meet his mother and grand mother, I should be happy right? WRONG!

He came over to my house last week and sat me down to inform me that I need to lose some weight before Christmas if I want to me his family. I really thought he was joking because I never asked to meet his family, and because if my weight is an issue why date me?

So I was confiding this in one of his friend, yes maybe I was wrong but I needed to talk to someone who knows him. His friend said that he would be proud to take me to his family and that he always felt that his friend was lucky to have a good woman and beautiful like me. So do you think it's my man or his family that have the issues?

That being said, from reading more on this documentary, I hear that this was only suppose to be shown in England, well a story was reported on the Jamaican newspaper THE STAR.

My heart goes out to this man, all he wants to do is live is life and support and protect his community. I guess some people would rather he was straight and out there robbing and killing people, that would be more acceptable that being a gay police officer.

Associated Press:

JOHANNESBURG, South Africa - Miriam Makeba, the South African singer who wooed the world with her sultry voice but was banned from her own country for more than 30 years under apartheid, died after collapsing on stage in Italy. She was 76.

In her dazzling career, Makeba performed with musical legends from around the world — jazz maestros Nina Simone and Dizzy Gillespie, Harry Belafonte, Paul Simon — and sang for world leaders such as John F. Kennedy and Nelson Mandela.

"Her haunting melodies gave voice to the pain of exile and dislocation which she felt for 31 long years. At the same time, her music inspired a powerful sense of hope in all of us," Mandela said in a statement.

He said it was "fitting" that her last moments were spent on stage.

Greensleeves sold for less than original buying price

gree.jpgUS based reggae/dancehall label, VP Records, acquired its rival Greensleeves for £150,000 ($17.2 million) less than its previous owners, but high administrative expenses may burden the record label going forward. In February this year, VP acquired its rival for £3.1 million (J$356.5 million), saving some £150,000 (J$17.2 million) on the Zest Group purchase price in 2006, even as the Greensleeves catalogue had grown.

A glimpse into Greensleeves accounts give a rare look into one of the most important reggae labels, which accounts for an almost Pac-man-sized view of the market. Previously undisclosed financials tell that Greensleeves was so unprofitable for the Zest Group that it lost £738,000 (J$84.9 million) in selling to rival VP: of that figure £104,000 (J$11.9 million) was a trading loss over six months and £634,000 (J$72.9 million) was the loss on disposal.

katt.jpgSo much has been going on with Katt Williams, from him being replaced at the Hip Hop Awards show by T-Pain, to the allegation from his "baby mama" of non child support.

As a matter of fact, his friends allegedly didn't know of his whereabouts up until yesterday.

According to Yahoo News: NEW YORK - Comedian Katt Williams has been arrested on weapons charges in midtown Manhattan after police say they pulled him over for driving a car without license plates. The 35-year-old performer was released on bail Thursday in time to make it for his show at Carnegie Hall. He told the audience that he "just got out of jail." Police say a handgun was found in Williams' car after he was stopped for the alleged traffic violation. His attorney, Charles Ross, did not immediately return a call requesting comment early Friday.

Jah Cure & Wayne Marshall Team Up On "So High"

Wayne Marshal.jpg(Kingston, Jamaica)

It seems Reggae singer Jah Cure and Dancehall deejay Wayne Marshall might just have one of the biggest collaborations going into the Christmas season with a scorching hot new single dubbed "So High". The song which is featured on the Moheeto Riddim was produced by Jam 2 and by far has all the makings of a hit with a catchy hook by the melody king Marshall while Cure holds his own with sharpe soothing notes laced across the bouncy club riddim.

With a title like "So High" many may assume the songs content was making reference to marijuana but on the contrary it speaks about the never ending journey to be the best musically. In a section of the song Marshall is quoted as saying "So cure that simply means we on a higher metaphysical level, souring to places they never thought we'd travel, now we seeing things we never thought we would have seen, not even in we wildest dream".

Hats off to Jam 2 for a well crafted beat which compliments both Cure and Marshall as they transition back and forth verse after verse. Look out for this song getting some serious radio rotation.

kenya.jpgKenya declared a national holiday after Barack Obamas election as the first black U.S. president, to commemorate the fact his father was born in the African country, Agence France-Presse reported. ``This is a momentous day not only in the history of the United States of America, but also for us in Kenya,'' President Mwai Kibaki said in a statement, according to AFP. ``The victory of Senator Obama is our own victory because of his roots here in Kenya. As a country, we are full of pride for his success.'' Obama's father, Barack Obama Sr., was born in Kenya and left the president-elect's mother two years after his son was born. Obama met him once after that and his father died in a car accident in 1982. Obama's first book was titled ``Dreams From My Father.'' Source: Bloomberg News

I was speechless. Today out of all the days, is what matters, history will be made, and our lives will be changed. How could he not vote?

I wanted to scream and cry, but calmly I explained to him that if he doesn't make his vote count, he could never "bitch" about the war, economics, politics, etc..

I hope that that he understood the importance of this election and voted. PLEASE GO OUT AND VOTE!!!

nicole-and-lewis.jpgLewis Hamilton seen here with girlfriend Nicole Scherzinger "Pussy Cat Dolls", is the first black man and the youngest to win Formula 1 Championship.

According to AP:

SAO PAULO, Brazil (AP) -- Lewis Hamilton of McLaren became Formula One's youngest champion on Sunday, making a pass on the final turn of the last lap to finish fifth in the Brazilian Grand Prix and win the title by one point over Felipe Massa.

Ferrari's Massa won the race in front of his home crowd, but it wasn't enough to erase the seven-point lead Hamilton held entering the season-ending race.

Just one year after Hamilton lost the title by one point after starting the final race with a seven-point lead over eventual champion Kimi Raikkonen of Ferrari, the 23-year-old Briton passed Toyota's Timo Glock on the last lap to win the championship. Fernando Alonso was 24 when he won the title in 2005 for Renault.

"We have to do it for our children, we have to do it for the people that died for us to have the right to vote." Combs and Jay-Z, whose real name is Shawn Carter, appeared before a crowd of about 800 at the Chester Robinson Athletic Center at Florida Memorial University for a "Last Chance for Change" rally Sunday afternoon.

Hip-hop mogul Russell Simmons, music executive Kevin Liles and fellow recording artist Mary J. Blige also joined them at the get-out-the-vote effort for Democratic nominee Barack Obama.

Saturday in the bathroom of his house on Lindsey Drive in Marietta, said police spokeswoman Cassie Reece. Reese said Stewart shot himself with a handgun but wouldn't say who discovered him. Stewart was pronounced dead at Kennestone Hospital.

Stewart ran the day-to-day operations of Def Jam, the best-known hip-hop label in the country. He was named executive vice president about five months ago, succeeding rap superstar Jay-Z.

Christopher Hicks, a friend of 18 years and fellow music executive, last spoke with Stewart about a week ago.

"Whatever happened over the past 24 hours is not a testament to who we all know," Hicks said Sunday. "He was a one-of-a-kind individual. If you looked on his Blackberry [stamp] it said 'One of one.'
