BET Awards 2009

Before I go into my thoughts of the BET Awards, please take a moment to watch the highlight of the evening. Janet Jackson adressing the world on behalf of her family, thanking her brother Michael Jackson fan's for their love and support. (watching it again brings tears to my eyes, I still can not believe he is gone).

The anticipation for this years BET awards was contagious. I had stopped watching the awards has it got boring and non eventful, I was commenting to a friend that even most of the stars had stopped attending the event,
This year it all changed because of unfortunate circumstances, the untimely death of Michael Jackson 3 days before the BET awards.

If you have not seen the show, I am sure you will be able to watch it again as it probably will be repeated 5 times a week, or look for it online.
I always like to address what stood out in my mind. Jamie Foxx was the perfect host, funny enough too lighten the somber mood, but serious enough to remind everyone of Music biggest lost. His performances were two the best of the evening. In no particular order here were my favorites performances, "Ne-Yo - Michael's song", "Jay Z - D.O.A", "Jamie Foxx, Ne-Yo and Fabulous - She got her own", "Beyonce - Ave Maria", "Ne-Yo & Jamie Foxx - Michael's song", "Tyrese, Gill and Trey Songz - Tribute to the O'Jays" and a all male old school review feat Keith Sweat, Guy and Bel Biv Devoe.
And then they were the no comments cause I like the artist performances, and again in no particular order "Ciara", "Keri Hilson", "New Edition"(what happened to the voices and I am so glad Bobby is off drugs, he substituted crack for hamburgers) , "Drake and Lil Wayne"(sorry Drakeyyy),and I forgot anyone, well it speaks for itself.

Besides the tributes to Michael, everyone but Ne-Yo (he must have been nervous,he came back later and acknowledged his mistake, wtf?)remembered to thank Michael Jackson, and then Maxwell closed the show. I like Maxwell and his music, I know that this year his suppose to be his comeback year, but the song left me lukewarm.

Now let's see what MTV has in store for a Michael Jackson Tribute,

Alliance Selector Boom Boom who recently adopted the new alias "Murder Man" is reportedly drawing the battle lines and preparing for an all out assault at this years Fully Loaded beach party slated forJuly 26th at James Bond Beach.

Boom Boom who earned his reputation in the streets as a top dancehall selector last week made it clear in an interview that his appearance on Fully Loaded was secure and that he will be looking to claim the title of clash king, "Mi book fi kill every sound dat book fi Fully Loaded, Matterhorn ah mi idol so mi want him to be the host cause mi nuh want to turn him inna ghost".

With the complete line up of artists and sound systems still pending Boom Boom had a simple request of the Fully Loaded promoters. "Mi want dem fi book Richie Feelings pon Fully Loaded", adding that the two have unfinished business stemming from an incident that took place at the weekly event Bembe some months ago. "Mi want to step up on di stage and show the whole Jamaica the whole world dat him nuh badda dan me".

According to Boom Boom he has no fear of going into a Fully Loaded clash with Richie Feeling or any other selector namely Fire Links or Code Red who he says came to their demise last year 2008.

For now the verdict is still out on just who will be showing down at James Bond Beach but make no mistake this years staging is already starting to prove interesting.

WHO AM I? THE UNTOLD STORY BEHIND THE MUSIC OF DANCEHALL'S BOLDEST TALENT

untoldstorybeenie.jpg

...From living on the streets and sleeping in the neighborhood gutter, the boys seldom changed; their clothes would be filthy, their skin dirty, and their hair caked with grime. But out there they were free. No rules. No whippings. And the freedom to wander from one community sound system to the next, singing and deejaying to small gatherings. Earlier, they had elicited rousing ovations from the small crowd gathered at the General Hi-Power spot on Sandy Lane. Among those bowled over were Reggie and Steve. The only thing the boys knew about Reggie and Steve were that they were visitors from Ewarton in rural St. Catherine, and soon after they met and had their first conversation with the two men, Beenie Man and Little Kirk vanished without a trace...
(Excerpt from WHO AM I: The Untold Story of Beenie Man by Milton Wray)

New York, NY (Ms. RAINE INC.): From his days wandering in and out of sound system sessions as a semi-homeless five-year old to his reign as the undisputed "King of the Dancehall," the untold story of Moses Davis is the untold story of the bold cultural movement--Dancehall--that was spawned out of the economic depression and political tribalism of Jamaica's inner-city. With WHO AM I-The Untold Story of Beenie Man, veteran entertainment journalist Milton Wray delves into the unimaginable world of Dancehall's biggest, brightest, and most controversial figure, while also giving a very intimate look into the growing mainstream phenomenon known as Dancehall.

Originally released by Great House Books in the Caribbean in 2008, WHO AM I has finally made its way to North America. Currently available through U.S. Reggae powerhouse VP Records in New York, and worldwide through Amazon.com, WHO AM I digs into the real story behind the rumors: the 16-year rivalry with Dancehall's 'Warlord'; the rise and fall of the Shocking Vibes family; and the very public deterioration of his relationships with two of Dancehall's leading ladies.

michael-jackson-1970s.jpgI woke up this morning and it hit me, he is gone, Michael Jackson passed away. Just typing the words are bringing tears to my eyes. So much is being said, his music all over the radio, videos all over the Television, and every website has a dedication.

I really don't need to go into his life story, we all know it too well, so instead I decided to share my all time favorite song of Michael and my earliest memory of him.

When I was about 12 my family was stationed in Zaire, Africa. My dad had went to Canada on a business trip and as usual brought me back a little gift. It was "Michael Jackson - Off The Wall" cassette (remember those?), I instantly fell in love, I had my grand mother send me posters to paste on my walls, and this song in particular, well at my first party I danced with this boy from Belgium to it. They were both my biggest crush and I never forgot. What is your earliest memory of Michael Jackson?

Whitney Houston - I Look To You - New Song - 2009

For 2 years now we have been promised Whitney Houston big come back and finally dare I say "She's Back" (unless she has a relapse that is). I've always said that R.Kelly is a genius and very talented , I just don't care for him at ALL, but I give credit where it is due.

R.Kelly wrote this single for Whitney Houston, not only is it this single but the name of the album as well. I am assuming that once it is release and she does press, her answer to who do you look to will be God! (It is a great thing, just predictable).

I love Whitney Houston, her voice is amazing, even though just like Mary J Blige it's never been quite the same since all the drugs, and I wish all the best.

San Francisco, CA - June 25, 2009

Soulful, radiant and powerful are but a few words that could suitably describe Dancehall Soulstress Cherine Anderson's performance at the 16th Annual Sierra Nevada World Music Festival in Booneville, California this past weekend.  Anderson delivered a set that vouched for  her vocal talent and growing popularity among international reggae audiences.  With the support of legendary musicians Sly & Robbie and the Taxi Gang , Anderson rocked the capacity sized crowds with hits like "Kingston State of Mind", "Good Love" and the her most recent chart topper "Shine On Jamaica".  She got the crowd involved in her performance and looked at home as she sang both new and old tunes.  Always appreciative of her fans, Anderson was especially attentive to the group of kids who flocked the side of the stage, signing autographs and taking pictures for well over an hour after exiting the main stage.  Back in the media tent, several members of the press referred to Cherine as an ambassador for the music and her country and inquired as to whether she felt pressured to be a female on the current reggae scene.

FIRE MUMMA IGNITES TECHNO EXPLOSION

Kingston, Jamaica - June 25, 2009: In a novel and creative move, which shows the versatility of reggae music, songstress Queen Ifrica has released a techno remix of her single Far Away. The track is explosive in nature and is reaching new markets with an infusion of the dynamic and intense electronic beats of techno, with the classic 'one drop' reggae melody.

Originally released in January, Far Away's laid back vibe of roots rock reggae was remixed by its creator Rickman Warren of Jamplifed Records. "We had a vision for the song" explained Queen Ifrica. "We just got the inspiration to take the tune on a different plane, to a different market, with a different vibe," she says excitedly.

According to the Producer, Rickman Warren, the seemingly unlikely marriage of these contrasting music styles is aimed at increasing the listenership of our Jamaican Reggae artistes and fans, as well as promoting Jamaica and reggae music in yet another way. "Our intention is always to be a force in the worldwide spread of reggae music," adds Queen Ifrica. "Reggae music is loved the world over, and we're just continuing to spread the love."

The Far Away Techno Remix will be available for download soon, from iTunes and other major retailers. Its release coincides with the recent début of Queen Ifrica's latest album Montego Bay which features the song in its original form.

I don't even know where or how to start. I guess I am still in shock and refuse to believe that the King as passed. There is so much to say about our Icon, and I say our because he was loved by all people around the world.
His life story is what movies are made of, coming from a large family in Gary, Indiana to the one person the most recognizable in the world! Michael Jackson has broken records in album sales, concerts and awards. Yes, his legacy is somewhat tainted because of the child abuse allegations, but Michael Jackson remained loved.

I will have more in his life and music, for now all I can say to his family, friends and fans is that our thoughts and prayers are with all.

REGGAE DOES THE RITZ ONCE MORE

reggae at the ritz.jpgLast year WorldFLavas attended "Reggae At The Ritz" and everything went wrong, if you need to refresh your mind click HERE.

So I am really hoping that this year will be better. I just received a press release from MsRaineInc saying that:

New York, NY (Ms. RAINE INC.) - The drum- and bass sounds of Reggae are once again making their way to the world-famous Ritz Theatre in Elizabeth, New Jersey for the second annual staging of Reggae at the Ritz. Marking the 47th year of Jamaica's Independence, internationally acclaimed Reggae legend Beres Hammond and iconic Reggae band Culture will make their first appearance at the Ritz Theatre on Sunday, August 2nd.

Last year's inaugural staging of Reggae at the Ritz saw Dancehall stalwart Buju Banton and reigning Dancehall superstar Mavado pack the Ritz Theatre with scores of enthusiastic fans for high energy, high paced performances. This year, in honor of the island's triumphant fight for Tarrus Riley liberation from British rule, Beres Hammond and Culture, both noted for breaking down international cultural and musical barriers for Reggae music, will grace the Ritz stage bringing more than 30 years of Jamaica's musical legacy with them. Also billed for the Reggae at the Ritz are young roots sensation Tarrus Riley and crooner Duane Stephenson.

They were here in New York for the celebrity soccer/football match and did a performance, it was great to hear a medley and to see them together. Too many groups fall apart due to egos.

I'm not going to lie, this movie scares the *bleep* out of me. After hearing so much about the date 2012 and the end of the world as we know it, I did some research and now, even more than ever I am so scared! (I don't want to die a virgin, ok ok never mind).

Of course, even though I am scared, this movie will not miss me for anything, and it's coming out before the end of the world anyways, so I will get to see it!

Never before has a date in history been so significant to so many cultures, so many religions, scientists, and governments. A global cataclysm brings an end to the world and tells of the heroic struggle of the survivors.

According to his Official Website AllSeanPaul, the much anticipated follow up album "Imperial Blaze" will be released on August1 8th 2009. Sean Paul is very busy all over the world promoting the single "So Fine".

I can assume that this is a lot of pressure for Sean Paul. His last album did so good, his music and videos were all over the mainstream stations and now he needs to do even or better. Still he should consider himself lucky, many Reggae artists wished that they had reached his level, but I always ask this question. By Sean Paul achieving this crossover success, did he take away his Jamaican fans? Was he still considered "real"? Was is music still being played at "Passa Passa".

It seems as if when a dancehall/reggae artist reaches a certain level of crossover fame, the Island is quick to celebrate him, but then turns around and shun his music as being "watered" down, why is that?

I like Sean Paul's music, I am not really feeling "So Fine" but maybe it will grow on me. I do have an advice for Sean though. Please stop with the braids, your receding hair line is in the middle of your head, not a good look for someone as fine as you.

To watch behind the scenes of his video shoot for "So Fine" visit our friends in Jamaica at DANCEHALLMOBI.

And here is he Live performing the hit single on his promotional European tour!

Brooklyn Music Festival recap

crowdwtmk.jpg

(Crowd pic courtesy of Diva Nikki Z) I am sitting here in front on my computer, 2 days later after the Brooklyn Music Festival, trying to remember what stood out the most and what I can share with everyone.

Of course the rain made it's way, same as it did last year but with a bigger fury (which by the way didn't stop me from walking across the field to get my Hypnotic and a bottle of Henny for Skull Masta).

Worldflavas arrived at the venue around 4pm, we were lucky to get a parking spot close to the gate (great for when it's time to leave and feet hurt), the first person I saw was MsRaine (MsRaine Inc) working as hard as ever.

Aviator Sports Complex which is where the Brooklyn Music Fest was held for the 2nd year, is a huge place and perfect for shows. Vendors were lined up all around the lot, and the smells of jerk chicken and tropical fruit welcomed your way in the venue.

We made our way directly to the media area to see which entertainer would be available for pictures and interviews, I don't remember who was on stage at the time but the small crowd seemed to be enjoying them.

I won't go step by step with my every move as I will bore you to death so let me jump to my personal highlights. "Foota Hype"!!! I was so excited to meet him but disappointed that i had missed his set, of course I asked him about the infamous video interview of him announcing the end of his friendship with Mavado) to which he repeated the same information. For some reason, I thought he was going to be cold and just ignore me, but he was so nice, posed for pictures and endured my non stop talking for a good 25 minutes. He was very honest and even made little jokes, I will share more with you in an upcoming live show on Ustream.

Besides the artists slated to perform, many others were there to show support and promote themselves. I even had the pleasure to meet some of my twitter friends face to face (it's always great to put a face to a tweet).

Bar-Bee looking amazing as usual, posed for her fans in the rain (she had her own Mr.Belvedere holding umbrella) and then performed. The crowd responded nicely but nothing out of the ordinary. As a matter of fact, what really woke up the crowd, and what made the rain stop for a few hours was the one and only "Capleton".

As he stepped onto the stage, as the first music note was played, the crowd erupted in a roar. Capleton gave it Brooklyn, and they gave it right back to him. I now get the saying "Brooklyn we go hard".

For those performances I didn't mention, you were either boring or I honestly missed it busy at another part of the venue.

Leon and The people perfomed, "Yawnnn".

Major Mackerel hit the stage "Extra Nice".

Natural Black "everyone sang his hit by heart"

Spice did her thing "Brappp". (looking very sexy)

Beenie Man showed why he is the King of Dancehall(as much as i hate to say it, he did great!).

Bounty Killer could stand in one place and would get the biggest forward, the crowd loves him and his song always deliver.

Elephant Man left me tired after trying to do all the dance moves(he deserves the title of Energy God), crowd didn't want him to go, they love him!

Ding Dong, well see for yourself the footage.

Serani, well Serani is so hot in New York right now that even if it had been boring they wouldn't have cared (which it was not, he stepped up his performance game, love him!)

And yes, Mavado, well to be honest I missed Mavado's performance.

I was busy in the VIP section, getting some pics of Elephant Man's designer (one word FABULOUS, CHECK HIS MYSPACE CLICK HERE), when I heard screams, saw Beenie Man looking frazzled being carried by his bouncer, doors shut and security running to the stage area, all this while Mavado was performing.

Of course assumptions started flying, by the look of Beenie I thought has had been stabbed, that Gaza and Alliance were at war. BUT none of that was the truth, my imagination had gotten the best of me. Some idiots started a fight in the crowd, which in turn made the patrons started running (of course guns could be involved), Beenie ran and tripped, his bodyguard earning his pay check lifted the king to safety and the show went on.

I had enough and was ready to leave, on our way out Capleton passed us busy cussing on the phone (wonder who made him mad) and my girl Diva Nikki Z had a minor mishap, do me a favor ask her why she has a Hannah Montanna phone (link her via twitter at twitter.com/DivaNikkiZ, or check her website divanikkiz.com)

By the way, Big Daddy Kane was a no show and I am still peed off but Doug E Fresh gave me my hip hop dose!

blasswtmk.jpgWorldFlavas Radio #1 Japanese selecta "DJ SOMA" (Live SUNDAY -7AM-9AM(JA) 21PM-23PM (JP) with his Dutty Jugglin) put me on to this new artist out of Jamaica by the name of "Blass".

According to his myspace bio:

Singing from his heart with intent to teach the masses Omarie Thompson, stage name Blass is a singjay who is ready to move the souls of the Jamaican public.
Describing himself as a versatile singjay and songwriter who can interchange one-drop rhythms to hard-core dancehall beats, Blass has always had a love for music. Born and still living in Portmore, Blass' love for music developed from his ability to write poetry back in his days at Naggo Head Primary which he took with him to Bridgeport High School. He explained, "Back when I went to Bridgeport High I used to always be getting into trouble from drawing out desks and banging on them and start deejaying. Music is a ting that just inna me, mi just born with a gift."
Citing cultural artistes such as Buju Banton and Bob Marley as an inspiration to his music, Blass is also a fan of alternative and rock music which he believes has a deep lyrical content. After high school, Blass continued in music with the crew Cell Block but that didn't last long as members moved on to different avenues. It was then meeting fellow artiste Vybz Kartel that his career really turned around.
He said, "Kartel see mi talent, him do some work with me. Kartel, Slash and I had collaboration Gal Know How Fi Whine which did well. I even traveled with him all over to St Kitts, Bahamas, tons of shows." It was Kartel who introduced Blass to producer Jordan McClure of Chimney Records who voiced his latest song Diamond Ring.
Presently Blass is signed to StoneAge Productions, which is headed by pioneering producer Hugh Stone, who Blass met three years ago. "StoneAge see me career long time ago, he saw my talent and him like my ting, di way my voice sound. I did single for him called Protection which did well" he said.  Other new singles for StoneAge from Blass include Yuh A Happen, Fret, Got to Go featuring Senator and Higher Tone. Blass also still does work for Adidjaheim Records.
He is now promoting his new single Rough Out Deh, which speaks now of the hard time we are living in. A video is also on the way that single, "Every Jamaican can relate to this song no matter which profession or class of living you are in, he added.
For the future Blass sees himself still teaching Jamaica through the word of his music.

That voice and video is amazing. Who is this "Lucky Man"? He is no other than Courtney John. The internet is really something else, I came to know of Courtney John via facebook, we are network friends, and I have seen him mention a video for the last few months.

Busy with life and work, following thousands of updates, I have to be honest and say that I didn't pay it to much attention, until this morning when I saw the video.

I logged in right away to facebook and searched for information on Courtney John, all I know so far is that his album "Made in Jamaica" is in stores now, please click here for more information.

Unfortunately I couldn't understand the description, but with Fully Loaded 2009 around the corner, I thought it would be appropriate to highlight some great sound systems. "Mighty Crown" was the first Japanese sound to win a world clash trophy! They come from Yokohoma, Japan and started playing in 1991. They are the only sound system that I personally have ever seen sell out an arena of over 30,000.

Fully Loaded returns to James Bond beach

Action onstage at last year's Fully Loaded, held at Fort Clarence Beach. - File

After non-flattering reviews last year when the annual Fully Loaded was staged at its original venue of Fort Clarence beach in Portmore, the stage show has returned to James Bond Beach in Oracabessa, St Mary, with hopes of providing an even better package than years before.

The event, which is known for memorable sound clashes, performances and passa passa, is slated for Sunday, July 26. Dubbed a 'disappointing loaded' last year due to long waits and major acts such as Bounty Killer who did not get to perform, Mavado only did a short stint and 'Mr Fully Loaded' himself Tony Matterhorn did not grace thewheels of steel.

better event

However, with a return to the beach venue and better management, Chris Campbell, public relations coordinator at Solid Agency, organisers of the event, says persons can expect a better event this year.

According to Campbell, James Bond Beach is the better venue to host the show, saying: "Last year I don't think Portmore was ready for Fully Loaded and based on experience, James Bond beach is the better and more comfortable venue. Last year's show wasn't the best Fully Loaded but it wasn't the worse either; we had a number of acts who didn't perform, but it was the first time that a new Japanese sound, Barrier Free, came and did so well which was something."

The line-up for the show has not been confirmed, but Campbell told THE WEEKEND STAR that persons can expect to see top Jamaican artistes as well as members of the Bounty Killer-led Alliance. In the past, Fully Loaded has introduced international acts like Cassidy, Ying Yang Twins, Rick Ross and Fabolous, not to mention Sounds like Mighty Crown, Vertex, Sight and Sound and Barrier Free.

Although unwilling to release the name of the overseas act this year, Campbell says persons can expect another International rapper who is larger than life.

Outside of the return to James Bond Beach and a new line-up, Fully Loaded this year will be streamed live onlinefor the world to see.

"A very important change this year is that the show will be streamed online for the world to watch live. There are not many shows locally, other than like Sting, that has done this and while we can't release where it will be streamed, we're happy doing that," Campbell said.

Adding, "It's the same Fully Loaded format, but we're looking to uphold a standard and to make the show more organised so you won't see people just running onstage or we not looking to have any backstage quarrels."

I know, I know, seems like every artist I feature I say that they are the best, but that means that you have not been paying attention, cause trust me I have featured some videos and singers that *sucked big time*.

But this is not the case with Delus, if you are faithful reader you know that anything Delus does I post. I will not compare him to his brother Konshens as they are 2 separate talented individual, as a matter of fact I received a press release regarding their new album. That's right in case you forgot Delus and Konshens form one super group called "Sojah".

The album is titled "Modern Revolution" and I will tell you more after Delus video "True Love". Did I tell you all that I am crazy over his voice? Did I tell you that I find him to be so sexy? And what does that have to do with this video? Nothing except I'm writing this down in case he reads this *wink*

"Modern Revolution" is the first official album from Sojah which will be released world wide. It is exclusively produced by the well known Irievibrations Crew and shows a mixture of Roots Reggae, Dancehall, Hip Hop and even a touch of Pop. When you talk about a complete album, "Modern Revolution" is a fine example. Each and every song tells it's own story but still manages to keep a connection between all the other tracks on the LP.

"Modern Revolution" is a tailor made album including guest features by Luciano and Iriepathie. This album is for all reggae lovers around the globe who are willing to take part in a "Modern Revolution". The Jamaican Reggae-Dancehall band SOJAH, which consists of Delus and his younger brother Konshens, grew up in Park Camp before moving to Sherlock/Kingston. Their Father was a soldier and their Mother was a business woman.

By now everyone knows Tiana, I have heard some people comment that she used the Chris Brown/Rihanna incident to make her mark, and other says that with all the violence against women, it was just being at the right place, at the right time.

Either way you can't deny Tiana's talent. Her voice, her presence, her message, all of it make her into this new wave of female singers that deliver great music with a message.

Here is her video for the #1 hit single "I won't", continue reading after video for the lyrics (you know you want to sing along in the shower). By the way note to some ladies out there, Tiana is a perfect example of being sexy without being slutty, and whoever take offense to it, well check your wardrobe) If you want to contact Tiana visit her myspace at www.myspace.com/Tianavibes

His name was familiar to me but I couldn't place it until I heard him say "Ring Ding Ding", yessssssss he was the singer of the song that stayed stuck in my brain for months, so of course I had to interview him.

Baby Chris and Alibra came to WorldFlavas Radio and we had a great time, we spoke about everything and then some.Sadly I don't have the archived audio of the interview, but to find out more about Baby Chris, click here and visit his myspace at www.myspace.com/babychrismuzic

I wouldn't even know how to introduce Fudgie Springer aside from saying that he is for and about the ladies! What is the word again, "Gallis"?

I had the pleasure of meeting Fudgie via twitter (follow him it is so worth it www.twitter.com/fudgiespringer), I noticed him from some witty updates. I have not interviewed him face to face yet (coming soon) but I made my way to his myspace (www.myspace.com/fudgiespringer) and he was everything I imagined.

As the site opened up i was greeted by background pictures of women from all nations, one thing for sure is that Fudgie Springer does not discriminate when it comes to the ladies, and so it will be no surprised many of his songs are all about the wonder that is woman.

In his own words "Fudgie Springer is a selector on Vybz Machine Intl. Fudgie Springer not an artist just a yute who like play songs for di gal dem. We say Pussy Good and it a work. Last month I posted the press release from BET about Tiny and Toya new reality TV show, if you arae not familiar with them, click here. I don't want to hate on anyone hustling and making their money but I do feel as some people sell their soul for a few minutes of fame and the old mighty dollar. The problem is that after their time is done, they are so hungry for a taste of that addictive fame that they will do anything for it.
I am not saying that this is the case for Tiny, after all she is a star on her own, she was part of an amazing all female singing group, but why is Toya famous? Seriously I don't know nothing about her besides that she birthed Lil Wayne's daughter. I guess I have to wait for the show to find out.

I don't know if any of you remember my posting of the behind the scenes of this video shoot, but after pictures and clips made their way to the internet, and showed Beyonce smiling so big at her co star (some say it was acting, but can she act that good?) Jay Z allegedly had the male model face obscured from almost every scene.

I really don't believe that Jay Z is that insecure, then again some of the world's most powerful men are insecure little boys.

Have you ever met someone and after speaking to them you feel an unexplained happiness and you just smile? Spending a few minutes with Queen Ifrica gave me that sensation. It is not as much of what she said, well yes it is in some ways, but it's more the energy that she gives out. She is like a ray of sunshine.

Queen Ifrica stopped by the Irie Jam Radio Lounge to speak with 93.5FM, the lounge was packed of fans and media houses. I've been there several times (as I said BEST place to be on a Tuesday night in New York) and I don't think I have seen the place this packed!

She spoke about everything from relationships, marijuana, sexual abuse and politics. I was able to catch a few minutes of her speaking with DJ Roy, and her acapella of "Far Away" from her album in store now (GET IT GET IT) "Montego Bay".

Of course me being myself, I dare to ask a question while SpreadLove Bobby was interviewing her. I needed to know once and for all why the song "Below The Waist"?

Queen Ifrica smiled, then laughed and explained that when it comes down to it, "make up sex is the best" (well those are more my words, but that's what she was breaking down), and without missing a beat, Irie Jam Radio played the song and the Queen broke into the song. She got a huge response from the crowd, and somehow when she sang "You know mi nah go nock you down babe No me just wahn hold you down babe Him seh gwan go put on your thong babe And before you know it it's another baby"

All you could hear were the men!!!

Tony Rebel and Natural Black were also at Irie Jam Radio Lounge and I loveeeeeeeeee me some Tony but tonight was aboutTthe Queen *wink*.

I do not personally know Sean Kingston, I have tried to ask him questions via twitter, e-mails or when he broadcasted live on Ustream and he has refused to answer. Maybe it's because I asked him why he had his sister send his $500,000 chain via Fedex (can you say duh!) but I must give him his respect for all his success.

To the pop charts Sean Kingston is a Jamaican Reggae singer, but to those who know Reggae, he is a pop singer. He has achieved great commercial success and hope to do it again with his new album "Tomorrow". Here is his new single and video "Fire Burning"! (how old is that saying?)

I am not impressed and I sure as heck wont be downloading it from limewire :-)

Congratulations to the Lakers!

This past weekend I actually signed on my messenger and a very nice and polite gentleman asked me if I saw the video he sent me, not knowing what he was talking about I asked him to resend it but to worldflavas@gmail.com

The video in question is a song "Tightest" by Lyrical, to find out more about this artist, please visit the site LYRICAL.

The song is maddddddddddddd and I love it, so now I am waiting for Hustle Hard Empire to send out the mp3 so I can post it to download and send it to all the DJ's of WorldFlavas Radio.

SOLID AGENCY LOGO.jpg

With the busy summer season now underway Jamaica's biggest, baddest and most anticipated beach party - Fully Loaded returns this year better than ever with a scorching hot line up of artistes and blood thirsty sound systems, all looking to make their mark.

The event, which has seen many memorable performances and sound clashes over the years, is slated for Sunday July 26th at James Bond Beach in St. Mary and although an official press release is yet to be distributed Public Relations Coordinator at Solid Agency Chris Campbell confirmed the appearance of an international act. "Yes I can confirm that we have booked a particular international rapper for this years staging but at this point in time the final lineup for the show is still being decided so until then I will only say look out for the official release which should be ready in a few days time".

A production of Solid Agency Fully Loaded has long been a calendar event mainly because of its huge line up of Dancehall and Reggae acts coupled with the best local and sometimes international sound systems. In past years Fully Loaded has introduced the likes of rappers Cassidy, Ying Yang Twins, Rick Ross and Fabolous not to mention sounds such as Mighty Crown, Vertex, Sight & Sound and Barrier Free to name a few.

Queen Ifrica signing at VP Records

IMG_2995wtmk.JPGTo say that it was a pleasure speaking with Queen Ifrica was an understatement, what is it about some people that gives out such positive energy that you feel as if you have been friends for years? Such was the case when I sat down with the Queen amidst her signing at VP records.

I just knew for sure that after I had my pictures signed I'd be rushed out, but it was quite the opposite, not only did she pull her chair for me, but she opened up about some of my nosy questions.

It was such a delight to see people of all race and creed coming to see Queen Ifrica in person, men and women, young and old, she took the time to speak, pose for pics and even be entertain by some of them (see my attempt at video filming - warning it will give you a headache click here).

One of the questions that had been burning my mouth was in regards to her video for her hit #1 "Lioness On The Rise". I love the song and can listen to it back to back all day without even blinking an eye, I was so looking forward to the video as this is such a positive and strong song.
The video was ok, it was nice to see her in all stages of a woman, pregnant and all but this is honestly not what I envisioned for the song, and after being hesitant to let her know my true feelings, I was relieved to find out that she felt the same. She said that I could quote her to her fans and say "I like the video but I want to do it over again as I agree that it is not as strong as the song".

Queen Ifrica explained to me that the record company hired a very talented director and that she had no input. I asked her if the director was a man, to which she smiled at me with her eyes and lips.

She encouraged me and her fans to write to her label, and send positive energy and feedback in regards to the video. We then proceeded to talk about relationships, men and women, we even touched on Etana new faith, and life in general. Her outlook on life not only shows in this CD "Road to Montego Bay", but in her spirit and words.

From the corner of my eyes I could see her manager "Tony Rebel", it will surprise you all to know that I didn't ask her any personal questions in regards to both of them, I am not sure why but I guess those will be for my in depth interview with the Queen. Going to VP and seeing her was a last minute thing, it was not planned but the Diva Nikki Z announced on twitter that Queen Ifrica was signing autographs, so I took the kids and their friends and made my way.

Oh, I also got a parking ticket!  All Hail the Queen!

So I'm up on twitter trying to see what's going on in the world (since everyone is sharing) and Red Rat now known as Double R is sending out the link for his Double RTV. Well let it be known that he speaks his mind and then some of what;s going on in the dancehall industry. Now I don't agree with everything he is saying just because I think that the problem is even deeper but he definitely hit the nail right on the head!

Now will some people get vexed by the truth?

Is anyone reading this familiar with MTV/VH-1 Pop Up Videos? Actually it was one of my favorite shows, and still is on VH-1 classics. On the show they play videos with commentaries on the artist and related facts to the video. I am not sure if this was used for Pop Up Videos but VP records has released it and I am feeling it. Great facts for anyone not familiar with Mavado.

When I say that dancehall is international I know that you all agree but it always shocks me when I hear of a dancehall Queen in countries that I assume know nothing about reggae, let along dancehall Queen competitions.

Austria is the birth place of classical composers such as Mozart, it is full of history, art and architecture. And now introducing Dancehall Queen Valerie! Here she is performing at the Hip Hop connection festival at the Vienna arena in Austria.

I was just thinking back the other day how Dancehall/Reggae has come a long way, I remember when I first came to NY and there was no reggae being played on the urban stations, and now we have Serani, Mavado and Elephant Man heading the biggest Hip Hop concerts in New York.

Not only that but the fans can sing along the lyrics better than the singer, well, could be that "No Games" plays every hour on the hour. Here is some more footage of Serani performing at the Hot97 Summer Jam concert that took place last weekend. Thanks Julian for the footage!

I am not surprised that the governor of Florida would eventually recognized such a proclamation, after all Florida is the gate to the Caribbean and it's population is most entirely made of Caribbean immigrants and old people.
The Proclamation states:

WHEREAS, during Caribbean American Heritage Month, we celebrate the great contributions of Caribbean Americans to the fabric of our nation and pay tribute to the common culture and bonds of friendship that unite the State of Florida and the Caribbean; and

WHEREAS, our nation has thrived as a country of immigrants and we are more vibrant and hopeful because of the talent and values of Caribbean Americans; and

WHEREAS, for centuries, Caribbean Americans have enriched our society and added to the strength of America and are leaders in government, business, sports, entertainment, and many other fields; and

WHEREAS, today we celebrate Caribbean Americans representing the islands of Bahamas, Haiti, Jamaica, and Trinidad and Tobago; and

WHEREAS, during the month of June, we honor the friendship between the United States and the Caribbean; and

WHEREAS, we are united by our common values and by the many ways in which Caribbean Americans have shaped our nation;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Charlie Crist, Governor of the State of Florida, do hereby extend greetings and best wishes to those celebrating in the Capitol today and to all observing June 2009 as Caribbean American Heritage Month.

http://www.dyfuse.com/files/images/usher-tameka-foster.jpgDuh? Of course he filed this morning, after all the picture of him and the allege product placement mystery lady at 1am coming out of the hotel was a big indication.

According to the magazine In Touch Weekly: "The Grammy winner has been living apart from his wife for nearly a year after almost two years of marriage," an insider exclusively tells In Touch, adding, "Usher's primary concern is for his children. He is a great father and just wants to do what is right for them." The soon-to-be exes have two kids together, Usher Raymond V, 18 months, and Naviyd, 6 months. And the insider says that it's more than just talk -- the divorce papers were filed in Atlanta this morning."

Kingston, JAMAICA - June 10, 2009

Singer/Actress Cherine Anderson will head out on an 11 week world tour beginning June 20th. We caught up briefly with the singer who was in rehearsals for her Caribbean Fashion Week performance this Saturday June 13th at the National Arena in Kingston, Jamaica. Even in the current economical climate, Anderson has been blessed with one of the busiest schedules for the summer. Speaking about her upcoming tour the East Kingston beauty says with her usual smile, "I love performing, so I am giving thanks for all the blessings and opportunities to promote my music and my new EP The Introduction-Dubstyle."  With her single "Shine on Jamaica" topping two international reggae charts for four weeks in a row and rising on other reggae charts, Anderson feels grateful for the worldwide exposure and the opportunity to take her Dancehall Soul sound and her Jamaican culture to new audiences.

Anderson starts her summer with solo shows in June before heading out on a European tour which will take her to multiple cities in Belgium, Italy, France, UK, Germany, Ireland, Holland and Switzerland.  On returning to North America she again joins Michael Franti & Spearhead and the rock band The Counting Crows on an eight week US tour which will play to audiences in theatres and mid sized arenas.  Anderson's manager Patrick Lindsay states, "We are committed to presenting Cherine's talent to diversified audiences across the world. This has required consistent hard work on her part and I am pleased that she has been up for the challenge.   She constantly performs with high energy for her audiences and delivers her 'Jamaica to Di World' message with pride."

Wha's going on with Lauren Hill?

laurenhill.jpgWhat happened to Lauren Hill? Did having  5 children from Rohan Marley made her lose it, or did she decide to concentrate on being a mother instead of the limelight? The thing is no one really knows, but rumors say that the father of her children was jealous of her fame and has brainwashed her to the point where she can't make a comeback no matter how many times she tries.

Lauren Hill has canceled yet again tour dates. This time it is all the tour dates of her European concerts. The shows were to take place in Sweden, Greece, Netherlands, Poland, Germany, Italy, Switzerland, France and Austria. Lauren Hill management company said it was due to health issues and declined to comment any further.

Now in my own words and my own thoughts? Some men like to keep their women down and I will leave it as that. (especially if nothing going on for them).

I played this song back to back for 30 minutes straight, well it is obvious by that statement that I love this song. The song and feel and riddim reminds me of her last hit 'Why don't we fall in love", but same way I loved that song, same way I am crazy about this one!!!

Since I now know the song by heart here also are the lyrics so you can sing along with me *smile*

Why are you the one...I can't lose

What's the reason that I'm here again it's crazy
I keep waiting but I'm foolish cause you'll never change
Wasted all my time and here I am still crying over you
Over you

Loving you was so hard
(But I keep Trying Baby)
I just end of with scars
(Cause I keep fighting Baby)
Loving you is like a battle that I can't afford to lose
I can't lose

But I'm asking you
Why are you the only thing that I care about
Why are you the only thing that I care about
Why are you the only thing I think about
Why are you the only one

Baby you're no good for me, no
You can be, You can be, You can, You can be the only one
You can be, You can be, You can, You can be the only one

Whos is the real flossing king? A new storm is brewing in dancehall

Recently it has been circulating in the media that the self proclaimed flossing king Flippa Mafia has been going real hard, even taking Jabs at one of Dancehall's most respected figure Bounty Killer, Flippa Mafia in some of his recent recordings has spoken about Range Rovers, taking the same liquor from one event to another, to houses being unfinished after years of construction.

Dancehall music has always been an avenue for artists to compete against each other lyrically, even though in the past things have gotten physical and lives have been lost. The state of Dancehall music for some time now has been very violent and sexual and this has lead to authorities in Jamaica Censoring artiste and penalizing disk jocks who have had the slightest of a slip up.

Always competitive and never back down, Beenieman has a brand new song " Ever Clean " which people are saying is a direct response to Flippa Mafia's claim to be the flossing king. Mavada, Bounty Killer and others have also done tracks retaliating at these claims by Flippa Mafia and these songs are quickly setting the pace for what is to be a very competitive summer and fall 2009.

All I can say is as long as things remain lyrical and fans of these artists understand that not everything said in a song is to be taken literally and that most of the entertainers are really friends, Let the games begin... Let's see who is the real flossing king.

Now that they killed Autotune, What will some artiste do?

autotune.jpg

T-pain has been accredited with the re-emergence of the vocoder / autotune in music today, back in the day I remember  Zapp & Roger Troutman " Computer Love " that was the joint. Now little wayne, munga honorable and even myself have dabbled with autotune but enough is enough. I will no longer use autotune, lol, and I wonder what alot of my fellow compadres will do once people like myself gets tired of it. It's been roughly 3-4 years since autotune came back on the seen,  It was mainly used in the studio to correct certain imperfections in vocal recordings but now it is widely used as an effect and it seem as if everyone is using it.

People have gotten tired of the same old, same old and I'm challenging all the artist using it to  take a break and be more creative. Let's showcase our natural talents and bring something new to the table. There are quite a few Reggae artist now that come to mine that I don't know how they are going to make it out without using autotune, I was listening to a mix cd and one particular artist from the Portmore empire, ( naw call no name ), totally dissapoint me when mi hear him without di ting... Do you know who I am referring to? can you think of an artist who cannot do without autotune?

Please join me in prayer as we lay autotune to rest....

Shema.jpg

For the last few days, I've been listening to 2 new compilations non-stop. The " New Chapter Riddim"  and the " Automatic Riddim " produced by Stephen " Di Genius " Mcgregor and  Donovan Germain & Christopher Chin respectively. The two projects are filled with quality lyrics and vocals from some of yesterday and today's best artist such as Marcia Griffiths, Beres Hammond, Luciano, Wayne Wonder to Daville, Etana, , Queen Ifrica, Christopher Martin and Wayne Marshall to name a few. Wayne Marsahll has another hit on his hand called " Mama Earth " on the New Chapter Riddim. It seems as if The Mcgregor linage is totally filled with talent, Shema ( We need more Shema) the daughter of Freddie Mcgregor and Miss Judy Mowatt and sister to Chino and Stephen Mcgregor, has a track called " Good Luck " which is one of my favorite, besides her wonderful vocals which can be compared to some of today's best R&B artist, I can tell that she did some background vocals on alot of the other songs featured on the New Chapter Riddim.

Queen Ifrica with " Lioness on the rise " on the Automatic Riddim is brilliant with her lyrics and vocal delivery, It's been quite some time since I've heard a compilation with so many timeless classics, loving it. I appreciate good music so if you are an artist, producer or someone who wish to shed some light on quality music and production, Chime in, Leave a comment and let us know what you are doing or feeling.

I could go on and on about each of the songs but be the judge for yourselves. Continue reading more to listen the tracks from these two projects........

I am a film addict, well just another addiction on my long list. Thanks to a loyal reader for this link, now I am sitting watching this movie. The reason I am sharing with you is because of this scene at 0:42 seconds. The lady says to her Jamaican live in "You walk out on me and i'm going to call immigration". That scene made me wonder how many people find themselves in similar situation?

techmirror.jpgBy a show of hands who doesn't sing in their bathroom? Exactly, we all do, and some of us (like me) sound their best at that time.
My daughter always brings the radio in the bathroom and i always beg her to be careful, I can just imagine the radio falling in the tub, or sink or even toilet (my cell phone been there many times).

Here is the answer to all my dreams: A singing mirror!!!
Plug in your mp3 device and voila! You get music at the touch of your finger, a clock, volume and look, if you are that vain, have James Blunt "You are beautiful" on repeat for when you are brushing your teeth!

Yes you are a role model!

souljaweed.jpgI am going to say something that might upset many of you artist out there but I need to let it out, YES you are a role model!
Now I didn't say you were a positive or negative role model, but you are one none the less. Why is that? Simply because you are in the lime light and you want your fans to buy your music, buy tickets to your shows, etc.

The thing is that unfortunately one of the biggest exploited market are teens. Teens will follow fashion and trends therefore making them your target. They want to appear "hip", they want to be seen as "cool", they want their swag and will do so at just about any cost.
Many of them have no parents to look up to (yes, I know it's not your fault), no guidance, not even in school. So they turn to the one person who seems larger than life, who embodies they aspirations.
They see a life of being loved and adored, the cars, women, money and jewelry (if they could on see that it's all smoke screens.) and they want to be you! Yes you! I won't start to name the most culprits but I will say at least have the decency to abstain from smoking "herbs" on internet TV.

Uh...you do know it's illegal right?

Dancehall deejay Demarco just can't seem to do no wrong. Still making waves with his street anthem "I NEED A ROOF" the versatile produce / songwriter is now pushing his latest project entitled "TRUE FRIENDS".

The song which I'm sure many of us can relate to speaks about the devious ways people who call themselves you're friends sometime have.

I love dancehall queen contests and if it was up to me I would go to all of them around the world! A few months ago I featured the winner of the dancehall queen competition in Belgium, even though some of you were a little unkind with your comments, you have to give it to them to dance on a stage and be judged.
The oririginal
promoter of the dancehall queen contest in Jamaica Big Head Promotions has teamed up with Reggae Gurlz Entertainment to bring you 2009 Detroit Dancehall Queen Competition, Saturday, June 20th at the King David Grand Lodge, 114 Erskine Street, Detroit, MI. Sounds by Chicago's One Blood and Detroit's Killa. Live Performances by Detroit's own Scorpian, Rusty Deyah & Channel, Hosted by D. Cherine Anderson thrills at UCLA Jazz & Reggae Festival 2009

Los Angeles, CA - June 2, 2009 - Anderson has the work ethic and sense of focus that is a rarity for someone so young in the entertainment business.  If there is a female Jamaican singer gaining respect from worldwide audiences on the strength of her talent and showmanship, Cherine Anderson's name would be found among the top of that list.  After rocking Eugene, Oregon to a sold-out crowd on Sunday night with Spearhead, Santigold, Soljah and South African band BLK JKS, Anderson was on a pre-dawn flight headed for California with only enough time to get to her hotel, change clothes and head straight for the UCLA stage.  If the Dancehall Soulstress was feeling fatigued, it surely didn't show to the music loving crowd, as she delivered a fierce set which left her fans wanting more.

What's Hot and Tech Talk! The Audiophile's USB Turntable

turntable2.jpgturntable1.jpgYes, yes and again yes!
I am far from the tech savvy person but I can definitely appreciate this "Audiophile's USB Turntable".

A few weeks ago while walking through the flea market I told a friend of mine that I wanted to start collection old albums. Everyone says that the sound in cd's or digital audio is much cleaner, but something about listening to old records brings back great memories.

Even though some of the classics have been digitally remastered after the artists death, the original just has more meaning, more life, even when it skips. I don't know why someone waited so long to come out with this but it's pretty much self explanatory, rip your vinyl, it's pure "GENIOUS"!

For more on this turntable and/or to order it ($499) visit the official website!

I LOVE this song so much and I am glad to have seen this performance. I didn't know who Phyllisia was, she is a very pretty girl and a real nice voice, but I am not feeling her stage presence at all, seems like she is trying too hard, I don't know maybe it was the heels, or she was off the riddim while dancing...

When you think of reggae and soca does Belize first come to your mind? One of my ex dearest friend comes from Belize and I remember she could "whine" like a soca Queen!
Came across this new video from Super G feat Lova Boy on Adamari Records, and It was just so contagious, I was blasting the music, jumping up and down and decided to share it with you all.

I know men love to see women "whine up", but if Machel taught me one thing is that men can sometimes "whine up" better than women, and these gentlemen right here are on the right path.

venexx_refill.jpgvenexx-perfume-watch.jpgI love this idea!!!

The thing is I don't really wear watches but yet I love jewelry (go figure?), this watch comes in different colors, from hot pink, to black, blue and more. To view the collection click here VENEXX.

What stands apart from the other watches is that these are perfume watches! That's right, follow the instructions, refill with your favorite perfume (Oscar De La Renta for me) and spray whenever you feel the need.

 I love it!

A friend of mine send me the link to this video of Souljah Queen and first let me say that I love the lyrics, they are real and am really feeling the music and whole vibe of the video. (is she using autotune?)

After viewing it I decided to find out more about Souljah Queen not only because of her music, but because any woman who starts off the video holding a bottle of Guiness is worth finding more about.

All I know of her so far is that according to her myspace she is based in London and she is a pisces. I reached out to her camp and hope to soon find out more about this sister!

The internet is going crazy with the video clip of Eminem at the 2009 MTV Movie Awards. Was it a stunt or was Eminem the victim of Sasha Cohen a.k.a Bruno 69 joke? You be the judge, all I know is it takes a strong and secure man to get a man's *ass* in your face, unless you're into that!

Eminem looked so mad, I wonder if he'll ever come back to the MTV Awards (if it was real)
